About Chasen
The chasen (tea whisk) was an essential tool in the diancha (whisked tea) practice of the Song Dynasty. Crafted from bamboo with exceptional precision, the whisk’s bristles were praised for being “fine as silk threads, resembling yellow chrysanthemums.” When whisked, the chasen evenly blends powdered tea with hot water, producing a smooth and refined foam — a hallmark of elegant tea preparation.
Emperor Huizong of the Song Dynasty, Zhao Ji, recorded the importance and ideal craftsmanship of the chasen in his renowned Treatise on Tea (Daguan Chalun):
“The tea whisk is made from mature bamboo. Its handle should be thick and weighty, while the bristles remain light and flexible — strong in form, yet not rigid. Ideally, its spine should resemble the back of a sword; even with vigorous whisking, such a whisk will produce fine, floating froth.”
In modern times, the chasen remains an iconic and indispensable tool in both Chinese and Japanese tea traditions. Whether used in formal tea ceremonies or daily matcha preparation, a well-crafted chasen is not only functional but also a reflection of refined aesthetic and cultural heritage. Today, skilled artisans like Chen Jinxin continue to preserve and evolve this ancient craft, blending historical knowledge with modern demands to offer both beauty and utility in every whisk.
