About Kutani Ware

The first Kutani ware is believed to have been fired in the mountain village of Kutani in Kaga province (now Ishikawa prefecture) in 1656 under the protection and support of the Maeda family, which ruled Kaga province in the early Edo period. Kutani ware is currently known for its porcelain body with a wide variety of designs, such as scholars, landscapes, animals, birds, plants, and geometric designs. Those designs are decorated with combinations of polychrome glazes and precious metals like gold and silver.
